With any club or organisation, there are things that need to be communicated to members, without being available to the public. To do this, the Sutherland Shire Canoe Club operates a GoogleGroup.
A GoogleGroup is a members only message exchange where any registered member can send a message to the GoogleGroup and the GoogleGroup forwards it to every member of the group. It allows members to communicate with everybody else in the club through a distribution list that is managed in one place.
When members join the club, or members move away and don’t renew their membership, the list is updated by the clubs administrators, adding and deleting members from the group. You don’t need to worry about any of that, just send your emails to the GoogleGroup address.
Note: Membership of the GoogleGroup list is reviewed on July 31 each year as club memberships become overdue. After July 31, all non-financial members of the club are removed. New members are added as they join.
Sending emails is just like sending to a person except that the group will only accept and forward emails from people on the group. By that, we mean the email address you’ve registered with needs to be the one you’ve sent your email from, otherwise you’ll get a reply that you aren’t allowed to send to the group. This is in place to stop spammers and other unwanted emails from flooding the group.
The address group address is firstname.lastname@example.org
Usually there’s a GoogleGroup email update at least every week or so, pointing to some club activity. Many of them are reminders to check the website http://shirekayaking.info. Generally though, we keep internal business off the public website.
If you think that you’re not getting any emails from the GoogleGroup, contact email@example.com and we’ll see what we can do to help.
Footnote: There’s some confusion about needing a password for the GoogleGroup. You actually don’t need a password for the group. There is a way you can access the GoogleGroup through a central website, which requires a login and password, but IT ISN’T NECESSARY. Everything normal members need to do can be done by emailing the address above. Only the administrators really need to use the GoogleGroup website to manage the group.
