In the first round, the drama was provided by the weather gods with wind, waves, and tide conspiring to make life hard for competitors and officials alike. We could only hope that the sacrificial offering of Lis O’Farrell’s Apple Watch to the god of the river would appease the angry spirits of the water before round two.
The round one results were quite frankly all over the place with normally fast paddlers turning in slow times and some excellent results posted by middle of the pack paddlers. It all seemed to come down to how comfortable paddlers were when flat water was anything but. It was a good chance to see the benefits of some hours spent with the Dolls Point crowd, paddlers who’ve spent time out on the bay were less likely to be perturbed by the rough conditions.
But none of that explains why, on a day when the wind barely stirred and the sun was shining brightly, only 20 paddlers turned out for round two of the time trial?
As time keeper Kaye was quick to observe, more points for the rest of us…
Minor PB’s for the day go to Ian and Sue (putting in the miles), Janine (putting in the miles), Lachlan Stokes (improving quickly), Lis O’Farrell, (new boat), Dianne (paddles better without wind), and Mark Sundin (who admits it’s all because of the new boat).
Lis O’Farrell also posted a PB in her new Think Zen, triggering an avalanche of interest which will undoubtedly have non-paddling spouses across the Shire shaking their heads in dismay at the thought of “another boat”. Robin Bingle joined the queue of paddlers to race in Peter Faherty’s Fusion, clocking a very good time in the conditions. Perhaps there will be a discussion in the Bingle household too?
The best personal best goes, inexplicably, to the team of Bert and Rod who have made a habit of being unpredictable. In future races, the time keepers will being using a Ouija board and some chicken entrails to select their handicap, since past performance is clearly not indicative. In round 1 the combination of tough conditions and some swamping of the boat saw them drop several minutes off their handicap going into round two. Imagine our surprise when we realised that the first boat to emerge from under the bridge on the way to the island was Bert and Rod, leading Lis by quite a margin. Even more surprising when the timekeepers heard a loud bang at precisely the moment we would expect the dynamic duo to emerge from the slot.
Turning towards the source of the disturbance, we were treated to the sight of a K2, nose up out of the water, being rocked from side to side as the duo attempted to quickly dislodge it from the rock that was now holding it fast. You’ll all be familiar with the rock. It’s the one that Bert normally points out to new paddlers and visitors to the course.
Explaining the incident post-race, Bert admitted that despite have paddled past that rock “about 3000 times over the years” and knowing exactly where it was, today he just felt the need to cut the corner.
Post-race, he now feels the need to do some fiberglass repairs to the bow of their boat.
Next race is April 15th. John Denyer will be assisting Kaye with the timing. Kate and I are heading to Picnic Point to compete in the Great Toro Race on the Murray River, A TC2 race with a Le Mans start and about 50 paddlers in identical canoes.
