2019 Time Trial 1 – Results

The tide was high, the sun was shining down, but not too harshly, and there was a great turnout for round one of the 2019 Time Trial Series.
A distinct lack of doubles, lots of new paddlers, and a number of experienced paddlers taking advantage of the warm weather to push their boundaries paddling K1s.
Ashley and Lachlan have been joined by two other juniors, adding a bit of drama to the junior series.
The drama started on the start line with Ashley breaking a rudder cable on the start and hooking left instead of sprinting off down the course. Paddlers on the beach jumped to him aid and got him lined up for a delayed start in a borrowed K1. He turned in a very respectable adjusted time of 8:20 in the borrowed boat. It was incorrectly recorded as a PB against last seasons results. Unfortunately that news is probably too late for mum who will have already rewarded Ash with a pre-agreed prize for a PB.
Lachlan showed the form that won him both the junior and open TT trophies in 2018, which saw him come home with 5:39 in first place. It may not be enough with new junior Carl turning in a 6:07 in a club boat, on his first attempt, to come in second. We all know how fast the improvement curve can be for new paddlers.
Third place went to Bailey in 7:41 with Ashley coming home fourth.
The junior series looks very promising so early in the year.

Moving on to the open series, the field were split fairly evenly between new members going off early in their first foray into the time trial, and seasoned veterans at the tail end of the field.

A little more drama in the mid field with Peter Faherty capsizing in the mangroves 90 seconds before his start time as he tried to manoeuvre the club K1 back to the start line. Bob went to the rescue while the clock continued to tick away to John Denyer in the next start.

Bob, who was lurking around in a sea kayak, got Pete back in the boat and away just in time to have him exit the mangroves at full speed, perpendicular to the course right in front of a rapidly accelerating John Denyer, causing John to apply heavy brakes as Peter slowly turned the K1 just in time to avoid the mangroves on the opposite side of the inlet.

Fast forward to the finish and the win went to Louise in her first race, followed in by Carl, also in his first race.

Tearing it up from the back of the field in the mixed doubles, the late starting Buchan duo just pipped the McGuinness mixed at the line.

Mick Rees mounted a valiant defence to hold off Peter Faherty on the line, making good use of the long nose on the Comet to win by that much.

The Buchan boat turned in the fastest time of the day with 25:13. John Denyer and Mark Moro tied for second fastest at 26:37 which bears testament to the amount of training they’ve both been doing over the summer slow down.

The next race will be held on February 17th
