Peter “It’s the pants that make me go faster” Faherty – taking the PB award for the day

A high tide makes all the difference when it comes to choosing a course across the open water between the island turn and the low road bridge. The shortest path will always be a direct line, but beware the shallows once you leave the channel. In lower water levels, the bottom suck will scrub away your speed and leave you drained of energy. Too far away from the shallows, and you risk running across the Southside sandbar under the right end of the high bridge. Mangroves on the left. Sandbar on the right. Choose wisely.

Followers of Mrs Bingle’s school of navigation will remain firmly in the channel where the deep water doesn’t effect your boat speed. It’s a safe strategy, but PB’s don’t come from playing it safe, and huge rewards come from playing on the fine edges of probabilty, using a little expert knowledge and trusting a little in Lady Luck by cutting across the shallows when you think it’s just deep enough, or you’re just light enough, or you’re just strong enough from training to take the speed hit in exchange for a much shorter distance covered.

Joan Morison was the Queen of the Shallows and knew to the inch, when the water was deep enough for a shortcut and when to avoid the channel.

But all of that was academic on Sunday, because it was a high tide and as long as you avoided the barge, didn’t hit the bridge pilings, and finished your race in the right place, there was no real advantage to be had.

At the risk of giving away a few secrets (although I’m not racing in the TT, so what do I care…), here’s a map showing the differences in course that you might adopt depending on the various tide levels. You can select different courses to see which one suits the conditions on the day.

It’s worth noting that the low tide course is around 100 metres shorter, which is around 30 seconds for the faster paddlers.

What constitutes high? Well, you’ll have to work that one out for yourself.

Five juniors lined up for the 1km time trial with Lachie continuing his winning streak, for the moment. With Rafferty and Carl improving quickly, he will need to keep his head down by the end of the season rather than looking over his shoulder to check his lead.

An interesting dynamic must developing in the Stokes house with Gareth giving Carl some coaching tips…

The Open 5km saw 22 boats despite a number of absences and a lack of doubles on the water.

Kim and Jenny continue to improve in the C2, and new member Matt is coming to grips quickly with the characteristics of the course.

Peter Faherty took the PB award for the day, improving his season PB by staying in the boat for the duration of the race. It may be hard to repeat the 1:31 improvement in subsequent races

The next race will be held on May 19th
