2019 Time Trial 10 – Results

The final time trial of the 2019 season was held on Sunday with a massive turnout of paddlers. Twenty six boats, including four paddlers who haven’t previously braved the time trial and three vet-junior combinations.

With it’s Hawkesbury Handicap theme, the Morison Cup is a time keepers nightmare at the best of time as paddlers scheme and plot to take the coveted Morison Cup (Bowl) by nefarious means involving the exploitation of women, children, and the elderly.

Matt and Raf Sheather turned out in the Mount Isa C2 normally seen being paddled by Genghis Kim and Jenni Tjoe. Kim and Jenni have previously argued that the boat must be bent because it can’t be paddled in a straight line. Matt and Raf have thoroughly disproved that theory. It can actually move. The boats designer, Laurie Fray from Mount Isa would have been pleased to see them cross the line in first place with a respectable time of 29:10. One of the fastest times recorded by a Shire C2 in a long time.

The juniors all raced the 5km distance in Vet/Junior doubles, so there are no results from the 2.5km distance.

The results from the first 2.5km distance are the final results for the 2019 season. Congratulations to Bailey for the fastest time of the inaugural season.

Open 5km Series

With 26 boats on the water for the day, the Morison Cup round was the second best attended round of the clubs year.

Looking back, the clubs attendance at time trials went up by 60% on 2018 with a total of 242 entries for the 2019 series.

Matt and Raff Sheather crossed the line first in the C2, making it look easy.

First time entrants Chris Latham and Lindsey Gilbert demonstrated that first timers have a good shot at surprising the time keepers to come in second and third.

Seasoned campaigner Bert Laurendet crossed fourth with his personal barnacle Dianne Langan close on his heels.

Jason Hodder took the PB of the day with a 1:49 improvement. Annette Matthews also finished the season on a 0:26 PB. Both impressive efforts in low tide conditions.

Morison Cup

A great turnout for the fifth running of the club’s Morison Cup.

The event commemorates the lives of Joan and Bruce Morison, founding members of the Sutherland Shire Canoe Club. The trophy is a bowl of Tasmanian Silky Oak turned by Bruce who was an accomplished wood turner in his spare time.

Run in parallel to round 10 of the time trial series, the Morison Cup is awarded to the paddler or team of paddlers who posts the best handicap time for the 5km distance. Once the main event is finished, the times are poured into a calculator, then adjusted for age, gender, and boat class using the Hawkesbury Canoe Classic handicap tables. The fastest adjusted time takes home the Morision Cup.

Each year the Morison Cup sees creative and nefarious combinations of craft, age, and gender appear with the sole intent of taking home the prized trophy. C2s have been a regular feature of the event. Sundo tried a SUP last year without much success. This year was the year of the Vet-Junior combo with three teams of experienced paddlers teamed up with juniors to have a crack.

The Morison this year was won by Steve & Kate Dawson who set an unadjusted time of 24:48 which became 23:37 on handicap. The next two places went to Deb & Jeff Buchan, and Ian and Sue McGuinness.

Finally…

After three years as handicapper, it’s time for me to hang up my stopwatch and say farewell. The last three years has been a lot of fun with plenty of laughs. Thank you all.

Thanks to Kaye who has been ever reliable as the chief timekeeper, ensuring that times were recorded accurately even when the timing technology went completely sideways.

And a special thanks to Bob who stepped into the timekeeping team on Sunday to allow Kate and I to race our one time trial for the year.
